Before Bollywood could write her off, her second film Himmatwala in 1983 opposite Jeetendra went on to be a blockbuster hit and skyrocketed Sridevi to overnight stardom. The chartbuster number 'Nainon me Sapna' picturised around thousands of pots set the trend for more Southern masala potboilers in Bollywood. Jeetendra and Sridevi became a hit pair and went on to star in many more successful films like Tohfa, Mawaali and Justice Chaudhry. While Sridevi was fast becoming the new poster girl of the masses, she also wowed the critics with her performance as a child-woman suffering from amnesia in the highly acclaimed Sadma remade from the Tamil hit Moondram Pirai opposite Kamal Haasan. Her histrionics in the film won her the first Filmfare nomination for Best Actress but she lost out to Shabana Azmi for Arth.
Sridevi's success story continued with hits like Subhash Ghai directed Karma and K. Bhagyaraj's Aakhree Raasta, both released in 1986. The success of the snake fantasy film Nagina in 1986 established Sridevi's reputation as a leading star. The film's snake dance in the climax also showcased her dancing skills under the guidance of choreographer Saroj Khan who went on to deliver many more hit dance numbers with the actress. The next year Sridevi starred in the all-time blockbuster Mr. India with Anil Kapoor. The dance number 'Hawa Hawai' gave her an eponymous nickname.
In 1989 she portrayed twin sisters in ChaalBaaz and won her the first Hindi Filmfare Best Actress Award. The same year her she also played the title role in Yash Chopra's Chandni.
Yash Chopra again cast her in his inter-generational romance Lamhe released in 1991. Despite failing at the box office, the film went on to become a modern cult classic and one of the biggest hits in the overseas territory. While the film won the Filmfare Best Film Award, Sridevi's intense performance as mother and daughter won her the second Filmfare Best Actress Award and much international acclaim.
In 1992, she starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Khuda Gawah, where she had another double role as a pining Afghan wife and her spirited daughter which won her another Filmfare nomination. The Telugu film Kshana Kshanam directed by Ram Gopal Verma was released in the same year and brought her her fourth Filmfare Award and a Nandi Award for Best Actress. The failure of Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993) was a big setback to her career, but she continued to deliver fine performances. She starred as the innocent victim trapped for drug smuggling in Mahesh Bhatt's thriller Gumrah (1993 and played a rich businesswoman with grey shades in Laadla (1994). In Judaai released in 1997, Sridevi played the role of a greedy housewife who sells her husband to another woman for a rich life. Her trademark performance won her her eighth Filmfare nomination after which she took a break to settle in matrimony.
